Thorbjørn Jagland Calls For Death Penalty Global Moratorium

Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland has called for a global moratorium on capital punishment.

His declaration followed this morning's death by hanging of Shahla Jahed in Tehran.

Jagland said: ''I am dismayed by this latest execution in Iran and also by the inhumane way in which it was carried out. Once again we see that the regime in Iran has little respect for fundamental human rights.

"But Iran is not alone in carrying out executions and this underlines the urgent need for a global moratorium on capital punishment. I believe that democracies should lead by example, abolish the death penalty if they have not yet done so, and support our joint effort to bring an end to capital punishment worldwide,'' said Jagland
