The programme, to be broadcast for the first time on Friday 5 November at 11515 (CET), captures a raid by the enforcement unit of the Medicines Agency (MHRA) on premises in the United Kingdom used to store fake drugs.
Viewers will also get inside a MHRA warehouse to see seized prescription tablets worth £10 million.
The programme also features an interview with a 79 year old patient who may have been duped into taking anti-cholesterol medication from a batch that was recalled by UK health authorities under suspicion that it may have been counterfeit.
Susan Keitel, Director of the Council of Europe’s European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & Health Care (EDQM) tells the programme of the importance of protecting the legal supply chain from counterfeiters.
“Although only few cases of counterfeit medicinal products have been detected in the legal supply chain so far, there are many indications and suspicions of them spreading. It is very difficult to verify whether medicinal products are counterfeit or not,” she says.
Viewers will also learn about the Council of Europe’s new ‘Medicrime’ Convention which seeks to criminalise the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit medical products.
"If this is not done, the potential damage will be huge and cause great public anxiety," adds Ms Keitel.
