A conference on the decision making process regarding medical treatment in end of life situations takes place in Strasbourg from 29 November to 1 December.
Health professionals, lawyers, philosophers and sociologists, patients’ associations and national ethic committees’ representatives are expected to attend.
Particpants will discuss What criteria should be applied when deciding to begin, limit or withdraw medical treatment in end-of-life situations and what should be the role of doctors, care teams, patients and relatives in the process?
Other questions likely to be raised include What should happen when patients are not able to express their will and the possibility of a patient’s previously expressed wishes being taken into account?
In Europe, more than one in two patients die in health care institutions, following increasingly lengthy periods of treatment.
